Youth Social Action – Opportunities Required!

Young people accessing Nova Training are looking for ways to make a positive impact on Sandwell communities.

As part of the organisation’s Youth Social Action programme, they’re asking for local voluntary organisations to set them tasks that will be of benefit to their community.

In small teams of young people aged between 16 and 24, they’re willing to tackle a variety of challenges such as gardening and clearing, and can offer anything from a day’s work to a six-week programme.

Co-ordinator Kelly James is keen to build up a list of opportunities, particularly in Oldbury and West Bromwich where courses are based, so that young people have a choice of where they go.

“Having that choice means they do something they’re interested in, which in turn means they can be inspired to do more in the future and develop further skills,” she said.

Sandwell and Birmingham Mela 2020

The Sandwell and Birmingham Mela 2020 will take place over the weekend of  Saturday and Sunday, 18th & 19th July, at Victoria Park, Smethwick. This year is the 10th birthday of the UK’s biggest South Asian music festival.

The festival will feature local and international musicians, dance, funfair, cultural arts and traditional food.

Do not miss this annual spectacular event which runs from 12 noon to 7 pm both days!

Sport 4 Life seeks Employability Mentor

Sport for Life seeks to appoint an Employability Mentor. The brief is to deliver the Sport 4 Life mentoring service for young people aged 11-29 years, across a variety of community and school settings.

Salary: £23,500 pro rata
Hours: 18 to 25 per week
Term: Fixed for five months (extension subject to pending funding)
Location: Sandwell/ Birmingham (with potential to be West Midlands wide).

Main duties include:

• To provide structured employment and personal development themed mentoring to young people to achieve both outcome and non-outcome progressions
• To deliver an intensive outcome-focused offer, addressing barriers to work and supporting them into sustainable employment, education or training
• To establish and maintain positive and supportive relationships with young people, whilst ensuring caseload capacity targets are achieved
• To contact, communicate and support young people based on S4L mentoring procedures and processes
• To manage your individual delivery budget and ensure budget lines are monitored and adhered to.

Announcing a new Aviva Community Fund

As from 21 January, eligible causes will be able to submit their projects to the Aviva Community Fund through Crowdfunder. Funding applications are open to projects looking to secure up to £50,000.

Aviva have streamlined the process so that, unlike earlier years, there are no activity categories or funding levels you need to select. If you need any help, they guide you through the process with free toolkits and resources.

Aviva are looking for charities to submit forward-thinking projects. Aviva always supported people through life’s challenges and opportunities, and now they want to give charities the wiggle room to embrace new ways of doing things. Because social progress happens when people are free to test new ideas.

All applications will need to be submitted by 23:59 on 11 February. The Crowdfunder page for each project goes live on 4 March so everyone gets an equal opportunity to attract donations.

Funding Available to Tackle Problems within Families

Registered charities that work to tackle family problems, or problems facing one or more of its members, can apply for grants of between £1,000 and £5,000.

Funding is available for both capital and revenue grants as well as grants for core funding and projects-based grants. The funding is being made available through the Kelly Family Charitable Trust which actively encourages applications from relatively new organisations to help them become established.

The trust prefers to support charities whose income is below £500,000. However, larger charities with pioneering pilot projects will be considered.

The next closing date for applications is the 1st March 2020.

Sandwell and West Birmingham CCG Primary Care Networks Showcase Event

Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is holding a Primary Care Networks (PCNs) showcase event. Providers, the voluntary sector and patient representatives will have the opportunity to meet Clinical Directors and their colleagues from the 15 PCNs within Sandwell and West Birmingham (Ladywood and Perry Barr).

The event will give a general introduction to PCNs and their role within the local health and care system. This will be followed by presentations from each of Clinical Directors of the 15 PCNs outlining the areas they cover, the challenges and opportunities they face and their vision and values for the future.

Attendees will have the opportunity to network and to talk to the PCN representatives directly. This is an ideal opportunity for you to see how your organisation aligns to the PCNs.

Employment and Skills Network Invitation

You are invited to the next Employment and Skills Network.

An agenda for the meeting will be released soon but will cover an update on the Aquatics Centre/Midland Metropolitan Hospital, Overview of Sandwell Adults Edutation Budet and is funding that was recently take over by the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) top ensure that it was spent on local people in front live without provision provision and a group discussion on Work Experience for clients.

The meeting is being held on Thursday, 6th February 10 am – 12 pm at the Bangladeshi Women’s Association (BWA), Wellington Road, Tipton, DY4 8RS.  An agenda for the meeting will be released soon but will cover an update on the Aquatics Centre/Midland Metropolitan Hospital, Overview of Sandwell AEB provision and a group discussion on Work Experience for clients.

Openings at Sandwell Young Carers

Sandwell Young Carers is a registered charity providing services to children and young people, aged 5-18 years, living in Sandwell, whose lives are affected as a result of caring for a dependent family member.

If you would like to make a real difference to the lives of the young carers of Sandwell then please take a look at the vacancies below to see if you have the expertise, knowledge and skills to join us.

We are looking to recruit:-

Social Integration Support Officer – £17,802 per annum (37 hours per week)
Someone who can assist and support young carers to integrate into local community groups, projects and activities so that they can positively contribute to their local area. This post is funded through the Big Lottery Fund.

Education Support Officer – £17,802 per annum (37 hours per week)
Someone who can work with local education environments to increase attendance, raise attainment and improve the quality of life for individual young carers. This post is funded through the Big Lottery Fund.

Parent Support Officer – £8,901 per annum (18.5 hours per week)
Someone who can work with parents, encourage and facilitate participation, support parent forums and work with disabled parent networks. Provide information and support on disabled parents’ rights and care packages. This post is funded through the Big Lottery Fund.

All of the above positions require the post holders to be flexible, sensitive, child-centred, trustworthy and reliable, have experience of working with both children and young people and able to work to the organisation’s policies and procedures.

Grants to Support Animal Welfare Charities

The objectives of the Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust are to donate to UK registered charities whose purposes are to:
• Benefit or protect animals
• Relieve animals from suffering
• Conserve wildlife
• Encourage the understanding of animals

UK registered charities that have independently examined up to date annual accounts and an active re-homing and rehabilitation policy for animals taken into care are eligible to apply.

Organisations involved with the conservation of wildlife, the rescue, rehabilitation, and (where possible) release of animals are also eligible to apply. The funding can be used for general running costs or capital purchases.

The maximum donation is £35,000. The Trust may award smaller donations between the meetings at the discretion of the Chairman and Administrator of the Trust.

Repeat applications from charities are encouraged when further financial support is given if funds allow.
The next deadline to apply is the 1st May 2020.

British Ecological Society – Outreach Grants

The British Ecological Society has announced that its Outreach Grants programme is now open for applications. Through the programme, individuals and organisations such as schools, museums, libraries and community groups will be able to apply for grants to promote ecological science to a wide audience.

The funding is available for projects that increase public understanding of, and engagement with ecology by:
• Increasing public understanding of, and engagement with, ecology
• Stimulating discussion about ecology and its implications for society
• Inspiring and enthusing people of all ages about the science of ecology, especially those not previously interested
• Developing skills in communicating the science of ecology

Applications from museums and schools are welcome but projects must involve significant outreach beyond schools as those aimed solely at delivering curriculum to school children will not be considered. Grants are not be awarded for purely nature conservation purposes or any activity that does not promote the science of ecology.
Projects supported will:
• Be aimed at a non-academic audience
• Provide a clear demonstration of direct interaction with the audience
• Show evidence of links to the research community at UK, regional and international levels, where appropriate

The maximum award is £2,000 which may form all or part of the total costs of the project. Larger projects involving other sponsors are also funded.
