The Small Charities Coalition is considering introducing a membership fee as it looks for alternative models of funding its work. The proposal is to bring in an annual fee of £12 for small charities and £24 for supporters and charities with an income of more than £1m.

Those paying the fee would receive access to the Coalition’s website, specialist mailings, training discounts and other offers. The Coalition has launched a consultation for charities’ views of the move and will also be assessing if the introduction of the fee is practical and viable.

It is proposing to undertake a pilot of the plans, subject to the consultation findings, between October 2020 and March 2021. The survey deadline is 20 September 2020

“As a small charity ourselves, we are heavily reliant on funding from grant making trusts,” said the Coalition, which has more than 14,000 members.

“We do not have the commercial opportunities of other large infrastructure agencies that work with bigger, wealthier charities and are better able to take advantage of commercial opportunities.

“As all good organisations do, the staff and trustees have been looking at alternative models of funding, and we would like to explore the introduction of a small membership fee.”
