Pixabay Free ImageSmethwick Community Sponsorship Group (SCSG), is looking for a Volunteer Treasurer. The Group was set up to welcome a refugee family to Smethwick and support them to integrate during their first year through the Home Office community sponsorship programme. This is an exciting new way of settling refugees with greater community involvement. The Group was started in the UK in the last few years, having previously helped one family in the West Midlands.

As part of this scheme, the Group manages a budget for planned and ad-hoc expenses over the course of the family’s first year in the UK. This includes costs associated with travel, setting up house (but not rent) and school costs.

The responsibility of the Treasurer will primarily be to ensure that actual spending is in line with the budget and to report to various stakeholders including SCSG, the lead sponsor charity and funders. This is expected to take the form of a one-page summary every 1-2 months and occasional verbal presentations. The Treasurer will would also need to attend team meetings, currently every six weeks.

The budget itself is being agreed among the SCSG, so no prior knowledge of refugee resettlement is required. Experience in finance may helpful but is certainly not required. Beyond this, there is scope for as much or as little involvement in the wider project as the Treasurer would like!

For more information please contact SCSG Secretary Jennifer Newingham at jennifer.newingham@gmail.com.
