ICON week, taking place 23rd to 27th September 2024, aims to equip parents and caregivers with coping strategies for managing a crying baby.
When a baby cries incessantly, it can be overwhelming, but shaking a baby can have devastating consequence Tragically, within Sandwell, there have been deaths associated with abusive head trauma (AHT) in the past few years, which have been noted to be due to caregivers shaking their children.
ICON provides simple messages to help parents and caregivers’ cope:
- I – Infant crying is normal. All babies cry. It’s their way of communicating needs.
- C – Comforting methods can help. Try rocking, singing, or swaddling.
- O – It’s OK to walk away. If you feel overwhelmed, put the baby down in a safe place and take a moment to calm yourself.
- N – Never, ever shake a baby.
