Evidence into Practice Sessions: What do Primary and Early Secondary School Aged Children Do and See Online?

May 1 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Friday 1st May, 11am – 12pm, Online Event

Join this session on the online experiences and harms of children in key stages 2 and 3, and how to consider online safety in services.

HDRC Sandwell are delivering information sessions with the aim of increasing the use of evidence in practice. These will include presentations on research that has been undertaken, and discussions on how that research could be potentially used in service design, delivery and in current job roles.

This talk will present some findings from a programme of research at the University of Birmingham on online experiences and harms. It will specifically focus on children in key stages two and three, reflecting on their experiences on both social media and when gaming.

We will outline some key risks and benefits, whilst also exploring young people’s motivations for engaging with various content forms that may be concerning, such as those related to self-harm, body image and eating, or the ‘Manosphere’. In so doing, this presentation will offer key insights aimed at supporting the online safety of this younger population. These findings and insights could then be used to inform future service development in Sandwell, by ensuring the online safety of children and young people is considered.
