What Are Plugins?
Plugins are additional bits of software that can be added to your website to give it greater functionality such as a recent Twitter post panel, donation facilities or online shops etc.
Plugins can also help to increase the security of your website, protect from comment SPAM, and provide robust member management, privacy settings and much much more.
There are a number of default plugins that come pre-loaded with WordPress, and literally 1000’s designed independently, many for FREE, which are available in the WordPress Plugin Directory.
Tip: If you are unsure how to use plugin features, avoid tinkering, it could be costly and / or time-consuming to put something right again.

What Are Widgets?
Widgets often work in association with particular plugins.
Widgets are feature panels generated by coded files that can be displayed on your website, usually in a sidebar/column and sometimes within pages themselves.
A sign-up box or login panel are two such examples. There are a number of default widgets that come pre-loaded with WordPress, and others can be activated using certain plugins (as explained in the previous section).
Widgets add great additional features to your website for either short or long-term periods.
