Works taking place at The Hawthorns rail and Metro station – 1 December 2020

Network Rail is replacing both lifts at The Hawthorns rail and Metro station to improve journeys for passengers. Both lifts at the station – which have not been replaced since the station was opened in 1995 – will be completely replaced and the much-needed work will make step-free access more reliable to both station platforms.

Work will start on Tuesday 1 December and finish in spring 2021. While work is underway, there will be no step-free access available at the Hawthorns station as both lifts will be refurbished at once. This approach will minimise the length of time that journeys are disrupted and the number of journeys impacted as there are far fewer passengers currently travelling because of the impact of coronavirus.

Network Rail understand, though, that this work will still cause difficulties for some passengers and they apologise for any inconvenience caused while this critical work takes place. Passengers are being advised that those needing step-free access to trains or tram should book assisted travel with West Midlands Railway on 0800 024 8998. Where possible, passengers are also advised to travel to Smethwick Galton Bridge, which will retain full step-free access throughout the work.

Passengers should allow extra time for their journeys and to plan ahead on the National Rail Enquiries journey planner at www.nationalrail.co.uk. More advice on assisted travel can be found at wmr.uk/assistance or call West Midlands Railway on 0800 024 8998.
